Building a Custom Engine Stand with a CNC Plasma Table

CNC Plasma SideKick CNC Plasma Metal / Steel Fabrication Automotive & Motorsports ShopSabre Spotlight

Don Abenante of Retro Fabworks takes a custom engine stand from idea to finished fabrication using his ShopSabre CNC plasma table.

Starting with a rough design, Don lays out a three-dimensional stand built from 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch plate before cutting the components on the plasma. From there, he walks through material prep, slag removal, TIG welding, assembly, and techniques for keeping the finished piece straight and free from warping.

The result is a one-off engine stand designed specifically for his fabrication table, putting the engine at the perfect working height for building headers, the intake, adding a supercharger, and tackling the rest of the project.

It’s a great example of one of the biggest advantages of owning a CNC plasma table: when you need something that doesn’t exist, you can design it, cut it, weld it, and make it yourself.
