Shop Talk: From Business Owner to Industry Educator
Hello, my name is Danny Wellens, and for the past sixteen years, I lived the life of a manufacturing business owner.
Like many woodworkers, I started with a passion for craftsmanship. What began as a love for woodworking eventually grew into a company that produced thousands of custom tables for families across the country. Along the way, I had the privilege of appearing on HGTV, creating largescale artistic sculptures, designing one of a kind heirloom furniture, and becoming a contributor for the International Woodworking Fair (IWF), where I spent years writing and educating others about our industry.
No matter how elaborate the sculpture, how impressive the CNC project, or how exciting the television opportunity, my company was built on helping customers gather around a table. That simple concept, creating products that bring people together. Has always been at the core of who I am.

Throughout those years, one machine remained a constant presence in my shop, my ShopSabre. Day after day, project after project, it became one of the most important tools in my business. Not because it was flashy, but because it worked. When deadlines were looming and customers were waiting, I could always rely on my ShopSabre.
As an IWF columnist and industry educator, I had the unique opportunity to see nearly every corner of the CNC industry. I interviewed manufacturers, attended trade shows, interviewed business owners, and evaluated countless machines. What I discovered was eye opening.

There are many good companies in our industry. However, there are also manufacturers willing to cut corners, make questionable claims, or rely on marketing tactics that create unrealistic expectations. Too often, I watched new business owners purchase equipment based on promises rather than performance. In some cases, those decisions cost them valuable time, money, and momentum during the most critical stages of growing their business.
As a former business owner, that always bothered me. I know what it feels like to invest hard earned money into equipment. I know the stress of managing production schedules, and trying to grow a company. I understand that a CNC machine is rarely just a machine. For many people, it represents a dream, a risk, and a major step toward building a better future.
That’s ultimately why I chose to join ShopSabre. I didn’t come here because I needed another job. I came because I believe in the product. I believe in American manufacturing. I believe in building machines designed to perform reliably year after year. I believe customers deserve equipment that helps their businesses grow rather than creating new problems to solve. Most importantly, I believe in helping people make informed decisions.

Throughout my career, I’ve always viewed myself as a teacher. Whether it was through HGTV, woodworking articles, trade show presentations, or conversations in my own shop, I’ve felt a responsibility to share what I’ve learned. Education has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my professional journey.
Today, that mission continues at ShopSabre.
Every conversation I have with a prospective customer is rooted in real world experience. I’ve stood where they stand. I’ve worried about the return on investment. I’ve questioned whether a machine could truly transform my workflow. I’ve experienced the challenges of scaling a manufacturing business.
Because of that, I don’t view my role as simply helping someone buy a CNC. I view it as helping them understand how automation can improve their business, increase efficiency, create new opportunities, and ultimately strengthen their future!
This industry has given me so much over the years. It has allowed me to build a business, create meaningful work, tell stories, and meet incredible people. Joining ShopSabre family is now my opportunity to give something back!
