Building a Custom Snowboard with a ShopSabre CNC Router

Industrial Series (IS) CNC Routers Prototyping & 3D Modeling ShopSabre Spotlight
What CNC machine does a custom snowboard builder use? At Stag Boards, owner James Black builds custom snowboards on a ShopSabre CNC router, shaping every board around the person riding it.

Stag Boards is a custom snowboard company in St. Clair, Michigan, that has spent the past four years building boards fit to each individual rider, whether that rider is six foot six or wears a size 13 boot. Every board is built for high precision, high quality, and a lifetime of riding.

Custom snowboard building comes down to precision in every layer. Stag Boards adjusts length, width, sidecut, flex pattern, and tip and tail taper for each build, designing the board in Board Crafter and programming the toolpaths in VCarve Pro.

On the ShopSabre CNC router, Stag Boards routes a trench for poured urethane sidewalls, then flattens, flutes, and tapers the core, switching bits with the automatic tool changer. Pop-up pins keep the core referenced as it's flipped and rotated, and vacuum fixtures the shop machines in-house hold it tight. A tangential knife cuts the base material and a contrasting-color logo inlay that presses in by hand. James says the CNC not only saves him a lot of time and money but lets him repeatedly build and test products.

The same workflow fits ski builders, skateboard and wakeboard makers, and any small shop building custom sporting goods from cores, base materials, and sheet stock. Stag Boards also uses its CNC to build fixtures, molds, and skis.
